Cocoa

Around 1AM I was letting my friend Allison out of the front door, when a bird (who must have been nesting in our door wreath) flew into the dining room. It was a fiasco. Dogs. Fly swatters. Body blocks. Tears.

After about 45 minutes Cocoa (not sure how we decided it was a he, or why we named him this - we were delirious), made his way to my room where we trapped him. We eventually thought he exited, but then mysteriously (doors were closed, so we’re not sure how this happened) my sister woke up with Cocoa flying above her in her room. He is now safely back in his homeland. All that to say….

1. I am seriously afraid of birds. I’ve never come face-to-face with this fear before, but I think the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Birds” has scarred me for life. I think my blood pressure is still high.

2. We are very territorial. I’m ok with birds when I’m outside, but they best not come into my place of comfort.

3. My mom has such a heart for little animals. She seriously adored this bird and kept calling him “baby” all night. Her reflexes are also a little slow, but we love her anyway.

“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” [Romans 5:1-5]

The things of this world make me sick to my stomach, really. I feel so sad that more lives were taken on Virginia Tech’s campus this week. I am horrified that someone broke into my friend Luis’ car and stole his computer in the middle of finals. I feel frustrated that people are discouraged from sharing their opinions/feelings on things in certain settings (namely law school and the church). But, despite the pain that surrounds us…there is hope. While here, we will be strengthened. And with the advent season we are reminded that Christ has come, and He will come again. We will not be disappointed.
